Job Summary

The Backend Engineer at Arab Therapy is responsible for developing and scaling the platform’s backend services, collaborating with web, mobile, and QA teams, and managing the infrastructure supporting the code.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable and secure RESTful APIs using Laravel for web and mobile applications.
• Manage features throughout their lifecycle including design, implementation, testing, code review, deployment, and production monitoring.
• Design and optimize MySQL database schemas and queries, focusing on indexing, profiling, and handling large data volumes.
• Develop and maintain integrations with third-party services such as payment gateways, webhooks, communication providers, and notification systems.
• Handle multi-currency payments, subscriptions, and financial processes ensuring accuracy and auditability.
• Contribute to DevOps practices including CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure management (AWS and local hosting), environment setup, monitoring, logging, and incident response.
• Implement security best practices across the technology stack including secrets management, access control, encryption, and secure coding.
• Collaborate with QA to enhance test coverage and release quality, and participate in code reviews, knowledge sharing, and mentoring.

Must haves

• 4–8 years of professional backend development experience with at least 3 years using Laravel/PHP in production.
• In-depth knowledge of the Laravel ecosystem including Eloquent, queues, events, scheduling, caching, API resources, authentication (Sanctum/Passport), and testing frameworks (PHPUnit/Pest).
• Strong MySQL expertise including schema design, complex queries, indexing strategies, performance tuning, and live system migrations.
• Hands-on DevOps experience with AWS services (EC2, RDS, S3, Elastic Beanstalk, CloudWatch, Secrets Manager), CI/CD pipelines (Bitbucket Pipelines, GitHub Actions, or similar), Linux server administration, Nginx/PHP-FPM, Docker, and production monitoring and troubleshooting.
• Experience using Redis for caching, queues, or sessions.
• Good understanding of API design, web security (OWASP Top 10), system design, Git workflows, code reviews, and agile tools like Jira.
• Fluency in Arabic and English, both written and spoken.

Nice to haves

• Experience with payment integrations, subscription billing, or multi-currency systems.
• Familiarity with Cloudflare services including WAF, load balancing, DNS, and routing.
• Exposure to security and privacy compliance frameworks such as SOC 2, HIPAA, or GDPR.
• Experience with real-time features like WebSockets, Laravel Reverb/Echo, or Pusher.
• Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
• Some familiarity with Vue.js or experience supporting mobile app backends.
• Experience in healthcare, healthtech, or handling sensitive data domains.
• Practical use of AI-assisted development tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot.
