This is a hands on engineering role with heavy customer exposure. It is not a support role, not a purely internal development role, and not a front end role.
What matters most is strong backend and systems thinking combined with real, hands on AI work. You should be able to navigate complex systems, understand architecture, trace and debug an issue across services and third party integrations, and reason analytically about why an AI agent behaved the way it did, whether the cause sits in the prompt, the retrieved knowledge, a tool call or the data, and how to fix it systematically. A machine learning research background is not required. Applied AI experience is.
You will work directly with enterprise customers to onboard and integrate the platform, troubleshoot technical issues, and ship fixes or improvements straight into the product when needed.
The size of your contribution to the codebase will grow with your appetite and your ability to execute product changes. The responsibilities below are the minimum expectation, not the ceiling.
What you will do as a Customer Engineer
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for enterprise customers: respond fast to queries on Slack, join video calls, and own each issue end to end until it is resolved
- Lead technical onboarding and implementation: guide customers through setup, configuration and integration with tools like Zendesk, Intercom and HubSpot
- Debug and troubleshoot complex issues in live customer environments, including complex third party integrations
- Implement fixes, integration enhancements and small features directly in the Node.js and TypeScript codebase
- Build deep expertise in the platform, including how the AI agents work and how to shape them through prompt engineering, so you can advise customers on solving their support and communication challenges
- Work closely with the Product Engineering team: share customer context, escalate systemic problems, and help prioritise and plan changes
- Document recurring issues, solutions and integration patterns to strengthen internal knowledge and customer resources
What we are looking for
Please apply if you strongly match the following:
- At least 2 years of hands on backend engineering, ideally 3 to 5. APIs, webhooks, queues, event driven and real time systems, and third party integrations. You trace a problem across services instead of stopping at the surface
- Production experience with Node.js and TypeScript. You write and ship real code
- Depth in at least one hard technical domain: real time systems, messaging or telephony, integrations at scale, data pipelines, or LLM behaviour. Deep enough to explain why things broke there, not just what you built
- You can reason about an AI failure like an engineer. When an agent answers wrongly, replies in the wrong language, or claims it did something it did not do, you can tell whether the cause is the prompt, the retrieved knowledge, the tool call or the data. Hands on work with AI agents, LLM APIs and prompt engineering is a strong advantage, but if your backend and integrations experience is strong, apply anyway. We explore this in the interview
- Customer facing technical experience in SaaS: implementation, solutions engineering, integrations or technical troubleshooting
- Helpdesk and CRM APIs such as Zendesk, Intercom and HubSpot, or the ability to learn them fast
- Excellent English. Clear in writing, confident speaking on video calls with enterprise stakeholders
- Comfortable in a fast moving startup. You prioritise speed, customer impact and getting things done
- Primarily based on site in Amman, Jordan, and comfortable working with customers across US, Europe and Saudi time zones when needed
Nice to have
- Experience with AI products, customer communication platforms or enterprise SaaS
- Background integrating or extending messaging and communication systems
- Experience with RAG, knowledge bases, or evaluating and improving the quality of LLM output

Frequently asked questions
Is this a junior role?
No. You need at least two years of hands on backend engineering, because a large part of the job is debugging complex issues in live customer environments. That instinct only comes from having built and broken real systems. Applied AI experience can come from any background, but the engineering years cannot be skipped.
Is this a backend role or a full stack role?
Backend first. Your time goes into the Node.js and TypeScript backend, into integrations with customer systems, and into AI agent behaviour. Front end work is not the focus of this role.
Do I need machine learning experience?
You do not need an ML research background and you will not be training models. What you do need is the ability to reason about an AI failure like an engineer. Expect to be asked, in the interview, how you would work through a real case: a customer reports that the AI agent has started replying in the wrong language, or that it confidently stated a policy that does not exist. Hands on experience with LLM APIs, AI agents and prompt engineering makes that much easier, and it counts for more the less backend experience you bring.
Is this Customer Engineer role remote or on site?
On site in Amman, Jordan. You need to be based in Jordan and comfortable working from the office with the team. Amman hours are the base, with some flexibility when customers in the US, Europe or Saudi need it.
Is this a customer support job?
No. It is an engineering role with heavy customer exposure. You will read and write production code in Node.js and TypeScript, and ship fixes and improvements into the product yourself.
What is the salary for this Customer Engineer job in Amman?
1,500 to 2,500 JOD per month, depending on experience and overall fit.
Who is the employer?
