Life Safety Engineer

Job Summary

Join the Transportation Project Delivery team as a Life Safety Engineer to provide expertise on fire life safety systems throughout the planning, design, and construction phases of a multi-disciplinary transportation project. You will collaborate with design, engineering, and construction teams while coordinating with the Design & Build Contractor and authorities having jurisdiction.

Responsibilities

• Provide advice and subject matter expertise on life safety systems design and construction, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and standards throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support development of governance and process documentation for the program’s life safety systems engineering practices.
• Represent the PMCM team in Fire Life and Safety coordination with authorities having jurisdiction.
• Ensure life safety systems design and construction comply with technical requirements through design reviews, submittal reviews, inspections, and testing.
• Provide engineering expertise to the construction supervision team during field inspections at various construction stages.
• Assess alternative compliance proposals from the contractor and evaluate feasibility and alignment to client requirements.
• Review deliverables from contractor and designer to confirm compliance with relevant requirements, codes, and standards.
• Provide management-level progress reports and briefings on fire and life safety systems design progress, issues, and opportunities.

Requirements

• Hold a degree from a recognized university engineering program or college diploma from an engineering technology program in electrical, mechanical, controls systems, fire engineering, or another relevant engineering discipline, with a minimum of 12 years of experience.
• Demonstrable experience in design, design supervision, construction, and commissioning of transport-related facilities involving passenger flows for mechanical, electrical, passive and active fire protection systems.
• Expertise in fire protection in buildings through passive and active systems.
• Expertise in smoke management through passive and active solutions and evaluation of CFD models.
• Expertise in safety of occupants, compartmentation, evacuation, and pedestrian flow models.
• Knowledge of Life Safety systems, standards, regulations, codes, laws, and requirements from authorities and technologies.
• Knowledge of field construction, project management, and procurement methods and practices, including standard safety requirements and site acceptance testing.
• Good stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including ability to facilitate meetings and workshops with large groups.
• Attention to detail when completing inspection and examination testing paperwork.
• Collaborative approach with good organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment combining design review, engineering, construction supervision, and administration work.
